If you take a look at the cost of drugs we require it's another example of the game we continually have to fight despite the fact we see profits rise quarterly at our pharmaceutical suppliers. When you spend time driving your car in traffic or take a long trip what do you do behind the wheel that puts you in danger? It's a question I was asked recently and although it sounded strange it was something that had multiple answers. The problem or better yet the answer can be dangerous to your life and let me touch on the ways:

• Somebody could text message which diverts their attention
• Eating or using your hands for other things than holding on to the wheel
• Speaking on the cell phone is also a potential deadly risk for reasons you can imagine

The old response to traffic or long trips was sleeping at the wheel or not concentrating on the roadways. They both as we know can take your life and kill others in the process. But now with technology and the focus to be on alert every second to social media events we may be at risk more than ever. Being alert is the #1 task for any driver and because some neglect to realize that we all are at risk. I saw today on TV parents of a child killed while text messaging trying to get their state to pass a law stopping this dangerous practice. Why are some states so reluctant to pass a law to stop text messaging and driving? Beats me. We all fought to change the law specifically seat belts being required and now we face our next challenge with text messaging. A small diversion of your attention can be all it takes to cause an accident so lets not allow states to be so blind. When you reflect on new social media communications in our life did we ever think it could be so dangerous behind the wheel? New technology was not suppose to inflict this type of danger but without laws to prevent driving and messaging we have to stay more alert than ever. How do you feel about this subject?

Soap Basket Boutique By Ani..Weekend exercise and here comes Spring.

I was doing my walking on Sunday and because we have had such a mild winter here in the east it made it enjoyable and relaxing. My point today is that I saw so many women running or walking that it was great to see that exercise has somewhat slipped into their daily planning. When you add in all the duties women have during the day it makes sense to take the time to ensure your health is being watched, right? I asked one of the ladies I saw if they did their walking daily and they said no but did mention weekends and maybe one day per week during the winter. As I mentioned it has been so mild in the Northeast that getting out has been much easier than other years. Creating time for yourself is my message today as we all are doing different things for our families but rarely take the time to notice that we have to care about our health or risk issues in later years. Being a weekend athlete is still better than nothing at all . Seeing all my other walkers out yesterday made me wonder if the weather brought out this large number? In the end it did and that's a point we have to realize if we want to stay healthy. The bad weather is a detriment and we have to find time at home to do something even if its walking in place, sit ups or lifting some hand weights. The term "cabin fever" applies to many of us during the winter and to make sure we are in better shape a schedule that includes some light exercise in the home can work. Being ready for the nicer weather is a great deal easier if you put in the time in and make sure you eat appropriately. It's only early March but I'm looking forward to spring which is just around the corner. How about you!

Simple, now that we face so much childhood obesity and kids are on diets that are unacceptable in many cases. If the double cheeseburger with bacon is on your menu this week I advise you to think again. We all realize schedules are tougher than ever and diets go out the window if you're not careful but backing away from known problem foods should be easy. Soap Basket Boutique By Ani..A doctors visit or buying gas is a sad situation.

Don't you agree we are going to pay the price in the end with our health? I was asked that recently by a doctor of all people who mentioned his clients are not coming as frequently because of the economy and the insurance coverage they lack. It's always been my contention that our politicians have screwed the public in matters of health coverage and we are at our worst time frame in history based on the numbers of people avoiding regular doctor visits. What in the world is up with sick people not getting care and going to the emergency room more often to eliminate the office visit? We are a proud and wonderful country so why does its citizens have to worry about basic health coverage or have to choose gas over a doctor's visit? Well it's simple, we have crooked men and woman controlling our health system along with our mutual enemies in the our pharmaceutical industry. We see our country getting sicker because of the infrequency of office visits but the stock market rises strangely on the pharmaceutical side of the ledger. Why? Well ask the same question to yourself about the Wall Street crooks who stole billions and nobody goes to jail? We sit and see health coverage rising and now the gas situation is an issue, that can't be solved. Paying $100 for gas gets you to work and keeps food on the table versus personal health is being debated more often than you can imagine. Our country will see more of its citizens get sicker because of the lack of office visits and in the end those medical costs could have been avoided if we had the guts to stop the politicians and pharmaceutical companies by keeping them accountable for their actions. "Greed is good" is not a funny statement anymore as our citizens suffer needlessly for the reckless actions of the few in control.

"10 ways your job can hurt your heart" was an eye opener for me when I came across that title in an article in health.com recently. (http://www.health.com/health/gallery/thumbnails/0,,20571051,00.html). If stress is the common denominator to hurting your heart then you must read this article to see if your job is on the list. We all know that being out of work is certainly on that list but what about bus drivers and emergency responders? If we all think we are not in a stressful situation what about long hours at work and desk jockeys? You may not be affected if you're in one of these jobs but be aware that the body over time is effected one way or another if you do work at these positions. We may be in the worst stressful time in our country's history but being aware of the harmful signs allow us to be proactive and do things to change the problems. Are you exercising? Eating correctly and sleeping soundly? What about traveling on business more often than you have in the past? The phrase "adjusting your schedule" is certainly an objective you need to figure out to maintain proper heart and daily health expectations. If you look at the presidents we elect after 4 years you tell me if they aged? Stress and other problems have results on us in the end but we do have the ability to minimize the damage. Your heart is your motor and your motor needs to be attended to right? Working longer hours or eating incorrectly adds to the problems. Missing doctor appointments or thinking it's not the time for a vacation are signs that you're caught in the wrong trap. Being responsible is one thing but hurting yourself in the process does you no good. As a person who does not drink soda it still was fascinating to read that diet soda was on the front page recently on the risks they have on long-term drinkers. The headline "Diet Soft Drinks Linked to Heart Disease" brought to mind all the benefits we were told over the years about diet soda but as with many products, intense studies find out different results. For those who witnessed the beginning of the diet soda media push it was initially targeted for those who wanted to eliminate sugar and calories specifically. "Some studies have suggested that consumption of diet soft drinks may be associated with Type 2 diabetes and development of the condition known as metabolic syndrome — high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and other risk factors. The analysis, published online in The Journal of General Internal Medicine, included 2,564 adults over 40 living in Manhattan. Researchers found that diet and regular soft drink consumption were both associated with a number of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Even after controlling for many of those risks, including diabetes, the researchers found that daily consumption of diet soda was still independently associated with an increased risk for stroke, heart attack and death. The reasons for the association are unclear, the authors said, and the results must be interpreted with caution".

I guess we should think again about soda and its potential risks more closely after reading this article? In the end the constant use of many products including soda is a choice we have to reevaluate for our future health. Are we going to get sick from these products is not the point but your risk to get diseases attributed to the long term use of these products is. Being the CEO of your health is something you determine so make choices that are healthy and in the end wise for your body.
